Welcome to our Countdown to Opening Day series. During the 30 days leading up to opening day at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, we will be featuring a clip or edit from winter in the West Elks. This is video 27 of 30.

The Al Johnson Uphill Downhill Race is an event that encompasses everything about life in Crested Butte.  We like the outdoors, pushing ourselves athletically, and partying.  First held in 1974, the fundraising event commemorates Al Johnson, an 1880’s mailman who delivered mail between towns in the Elks and West Elks on an 1800s touring setup.  The event has turned into an enormous party, where participants dress up to participate.  While there are some competitive racers, the event is more of a parade, except that you skin up and ski down some respectable terrain.  If this is your first winter in the valley, don’t miss it.  Video by www.gunnisoncrestedbutte.com
