USA Pro Cycling Challenge

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge will be back in Crested Butte Tuesday August 21. There are events and activites planned the day before and day of race. Check them out below.

Monday August 20th
New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat comes to CB for the Crested Butte Last Sprint Block Party in the historic downtown of Crested Butte Monday August 20th at 6pm. This block party is the kick off for the USA Pro Challenge Stage 2 race through Crested Butte and up to Mt. Crested Butte which takes place the following day on Tuesday, August 21. Elk Avenue, between 2nd and 3rd will be closed for the celebration at 6 p.m. on Monday evening, so bring your townie and costume to this fun-packed evening! New Belgium and Avery Breweries will be on hand for refreshments. Live music from Coral Creek Band and local DJs from KBUT Community Radio will be there for entertainment. Music, food and fun games for all ages. Come join us as we kick of the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge!

Tuesday August 21st
8:45 Registration for the Townie Crit – “Townies” are the bikes used for your everyday transportation through town, also known as “cruiser bikes”. The organizing committee has set up a Townie Criterium in downtown Crested Butte that takes racers on a loop through town and includes a pass through in one of the local bars, “The Talk of the Town”. Dress in your favorite tutu, wig or crazy costume and join the fun. Races start at 11am.

The finish is always a huge place of anticipation and some of the hottest action when it comes to stage racing, so why not throw a big party around it all? The USA Pro Challenge Finish Festival at Mt. Crested Butte will host a huge party scene including live entertainment, New Belgium beer, jumbotrons, and lots of race hype from tour sponsors including the Radio Shack Tour Tracker, Jelly Belly, and 2012 Tour gear from Pearl Izumi. Some of your favorite local vendors are also on hand including Crested Butte Mountain Resort, CS Irwin, Colorado FreeSkier, Mountain Flyer, Crested Butte Mountain Guides, CB Mountain Bike Association, Third Bowl Ice Cream, The Sherpa Café, Mulay’s Sausage, West End Public House and Cowabunga Creamery out of Paonia! The festival is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will be the location for the up close and personal awards ceremony immediately following the finish.

The Crested Butte Dance Collective will amaze with their talented aerialists performing @ Noon, 12:45, 1:15 and 2pm. Their stilt walkers can be seen from afar around the Kids Zone at Noon, 1pm, 2pm. Don’t miss them, the sets will be prompt and concise!

Maxxis Stunt Shows will also be taking place in the Finish Festival area between 2 – 3 p.m.

The Kids Zone once again features some exciting hands-on art projects from the creative minds at the Trailhead Children’s Museum and The Studio including Bicycle Spin Art among others!

The Strider Cup returns to the Finish Line at 2:00pm. Sign up at the Strider Tent in the Kids Zone up until the race.

Ride your bike up and park your bike right in the middle of the action with our Bike Valet.

Live music from Coral Creek and Casey James Prestwood & the Burning Angels will take place throughout the day, keeping the crowds rocking through until the end of the Festival at 6 p.m.

Catch the race on the following day up and over Cottonwood pass. The road is closed on Tuesday August 21st at 2pm, but you can always park at the base and ride up.
