Review of Meathead Films “No Matter What”

meathead Films

For over ten years, Vermont-based Meathead Films has produced movies that make east coasters proud to call their humble hills of the Appalachian Mountains home.  In their eleventh film, the Meatheads had to work hard and be creative to overcome the record warm winter that plagued practically the entire country (except the PNW of course).  “No Matter What” is aptly named as it captures the essence of skiing on the east coast.  Yeah, you aren’t skiing the biggest mountains, and saying “the weather sucks” is an understatement. However, if you are patient, ready to work hard, and a little lucky, the skiing can be pretty damn good.

This film is very relatable as most people (again, screw you PNW) dealt with the same frustrating conditions and subsequent feelings resulting from one of the weakest winters ever.  As always, the Meatheads’ film features creative and gnarly urban segments that leave you scratching your head at the progression from the past and the possibilities for the future.  They take advantage of the rare moments of good snow, including a seventy inch February storm at Jay Peak and Stowe.  Another major highlight of the film is when the Meathead  crew, including Erik Olson, Andrew Whiteford, Dan Marion, and Will Wesson, abandons the dry slopes of the east coast and flees to Switzerland, where they catch the tail end of a great winter.  The crew sessions everything, from big mountain lines and powder to booters and urban.

Most people who grew up out west probably won’t give a movie about east coast skiing a chance.  Their loss.  The movie kicks ass.  The fact of the matter is east coasters don’t care.  They’re gonna get theirs no matter what.
