Recap: The Meeting 10

photo-10

This weekend, we walked over the Elks for the 10th year of a great gathering simply known as The Meeting.  For those who don’t know, The Meeting is a showing of all the biggest ski and snowboard movies of the year, displayed for three nights at Aspen’s iconic Wheeler Opera House, the Sun Deck on Ajax, and the Belly Up.   In addition, there are industry conferences, events, and parties that make for a fun, informative, and slightly ridiculous weekend with good people from all over the snow industry.   This year we arrived Friday, missing the awesome local NEPSA awards.  But all in all it was another great time.  We’ll be back next year.

So here are some quick thoughts on movies and other things from our time at The Meeting 10.

-Jones Brothers are crushing. Between TGR’s Almost Ablaze, Jeremy’s work at Protect Our Winters, and the completion of Deeper, Further, Higher, the Jones brothers are having a very successful fall.  Higher was extremely entertaining.  It’s pretty cool that Jeremy’s older brothers at TGR are in charge of telling the story, from their childhood in Cape Cod to the highest mountains of the world in Nepal.  Higher rocks.  Jeremy is one of the coolest stories in the mountain sports world.  In addition to the trilogy, Jeremy’s climate change awareness non profit Protect Our Winters is making a huge impact in the fight against climate change.  Almost Ablaze, the 2014 feature from TGR, drew an overwhelmingly positive response from viewers.  There’s a reason they took Film of the Year honors at IF3.  Between the movies and a Protect our Winters Party at the Aspen Brewery, the Jones Brothers owned the final day of The Meeting 10. We can’t wait to see the Sammy C Project, out next fall.

-Red Bull’s Speedriding Project looks nuts.

– The town of Aspen and Aspen Skiing Company are actually doing something in the fight against climate change.  Their activism, green operations, and philanthropy efforts are pretty impressive.  To learn more about what they’re doing, visit www.aspensnowmass.com/we-are-different/our-environmental-commitment  Oh and way to ban single use plastic bags.  CB needs to get on board with that.

MSP’s DOMY Shifts Style- MSP focused on story and theme, creating a different style from its past.  Resort shredding segment resonated with general audience.  Permin’s still a beast.  Cody Townsend’s straightline is freaking awesome.  Manuel Eder makes a good addition to the team.

– It is harder to walk back from the Meeting than it is to walk there.
