Pretty Faces Premieres to a Packed Crowd in Boulder

Pretty Faces: The Story of a Skier Girl made it’s world debut to a sold out and enthusiastic crowd at the Boulder Theater.  It was in fact so crowded that I ended up sharing a seat.  The excitement was different not simply because it was an all female film, but that it was a film funded by many in the crowd through a Kickstarter campaign.  People were there to root for the movie, because women and men both want to see more strong women pushing the limits in action sports.

The women were looking sparkly and fierce before the premiere.

The women were looking sparkly and fierce before the premiere.

When the lights went down, we were treated to an enormous cast of female skiers crushing it, from the Europe to Alaska, in all aspects of the game.  The crowd went absolutely nuts for the monstrous airs of Elyse Saugstaud.  We were treated to very strong performances (there are frankly too many to name) from Dyer, Monod, Burks, and Collinson.  Nadia Samer crushes on a sled.  All around stud Suz Graham could be the baddest woman in action sports.   We get to see girls being candid and gross, instead of dolled up for segments full of close ups.  But most of all, we get to see fun.

The movie’s message is not simply that girls can be badass (they are, as is shown) but instead how life enriching it is to adventure and be outside with your friends.   Pushing limits through actions sports, no matter what level you are, teaches invaluable life lessons that create a stronger and happier girl.  In creating Pretty Face, Lynsey Dyer set out “to give young girls something positive to look up to…I wanted to give them their Blizzard of Ahhs, Ski Movie or High Life, but done in a way that also shows the elegance, grace, community and style that is unique to women in the mountains.”  Pretty Faces: The Story of a Skier Girl succeeds.
