Community, meet Zach Guy.

Zach moved from Bozeman, Montana to Crested Butte in November 2011 after finishing his graduate degree in Snow Science with a thesis on spatial variability within snow packs. His snow science smarts landed him a gig as an intern guide at CS Irwin.  More recently, you may have used his snow profiles from the plethora of posts on the CB Avalanche centers “Recent Observations.” When you see him, thank him for his pit digging and analysis, which give us more information to stay safe in the backcountry.

As a member of the Alpine Orthopedic bike team, he spends his time competing in cross country endurance races throughout the summer. He placed first in this year’s Durango Dirty Century and Salida’s Big Freaking Loop.  For the past three years, Zach has focused on the Colorado Trail Race, where he finished 3rd most recently. Zach states that “nothing compares to riding your bike for hundreds of miles in the same set of bike shorts with fellow competitors doing the same thing.” Although it was a brutal year with rain and people dropping out, he could only think about doing the race for 12 months. This race set him off on his quest for podium finishes in the endurance races around Colorado.

Check out of couple of his recent results.

1st – 2012 Salida Big Freaking Loop 100 miles
1st – 2012 Durango Dirty Century
2nd – 2011 24 Hours of Rapple J Solo
3rd – 2011 Colorado Trail Race
10th – 2011 Breckenridge 100
25th – 2012 Wildflower Rush

Zach will compete in the rest of the local Pinnacle Races in both the XC and DH fields. Other races for the 2012 season include the 24 Hour Rage in the Sage in Gunnison, Vapor Trail in Salida, while preparing to peak at the 24 Hour National in Colorado Springs.

Besides coming to Crested Butte with both ski and bike gear in his golden brown in Subaru, he also managed to squeeze three costume boxes, that he is known to break out for all ocasions. In this year’s 4th of July Parade on the Irwin float, Zach was a senior prom. His costume included a retainer, fancy tuxedo, along with a very elegant blow up doll.  He enjoys costumes as much as suffering.

We wish Zach luck in his upcoming events and look forward to seeing him on the podium in the near future.
